Qualifications/Details:

  • Wes Hagen has researched, written and had approved 4 AVAs in Santa Barbara County: Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, and Alisos Canyon
  • AVA development, either a new AVA or a ‘sub-AVA (within an existing AVA), takes between 8-16 months for research and writing, and another 1-3 years for government approval,
  • An AVA gives tons of national wine media articles and focus, $25,000-$50,000 of ‘free ink’
  • AVA development and writing costs can be shared over multiple vineyards and wineries

Cost:

  • New AVA Development: $65,000-$100,000 depending on scope of work and travel
  • AVA Expansion: $45,000-$80,000 depending on size and scope
